The Consumption Vs Production Narrative?

The Consumption Vs Production Narrative

Some days ago, I had an argument with a friend on Twitter about the idea of book clubs noting the fact that most book clubs will be doing more harm than good in the long run. While currently, it seems they are doing lots of good work, beneath, they are strengthening the consumption narrative.

The consumption narrative is what has led us to the assumption that our attention span has reduced. What those who make this claim mean is that our attention span to do something productive has reduced; however, on a general note, our attention span has not reduced one bit. In fact, it has increased.

With the presence of the internet, social media and e-commerce rave, individuals, brands and organizations are on the loose to get people fixated on the content they give out for free on one hand. As reward, they gain reward in form of influence which turns into cash for them while we the consumer become the product or we buy the product.

On the other hand, we have become exposed and highly fixated to trending news – what we refer to as gist. The internet took away the power of news dissemination from News Agencies and gave it to the masses. Today, the volume of gist flying on a daily basis is tremendous. The need to want to stay current is also misleading.

The school taught us to sit, and wait for the teacher to provide the information we need to succeed in life. It did not teach us to hustle for it. To work for it. To strive for it.

The school taught us to be dependant, to play it small, take zero risk and just consume. The attention span to do something productive is reducing by the day while the attention span to consume will keep increasing.

You are wired to consume. You were trained that way. However, you were not born that way. You were born curious and daring. You relentlessly tried stuff out as a kid but now, all of those good stuff was taken away from you and replaced with this. The good news is that anything can be learnt and unlearnt.

If you enjoy updating yourself with the latest gist, your production mind set should better lead you to make something out of it. Rather than always being the product or buying the product what about selling yours?

It is a battle of consumption vs production. You have spent the past 20+ of your life learning to consume. It is high time you learnt to produce.
